Description
Near Kumamoto on the southern island of Kyushu, the landscape takes on a more open, rural character than Karhu's usual urban Kyoto subjects in this 1980 print. The composition may depict the approaches to Kumamoto Castle — Japan's largest surviving castle complex — or the surrounding farmland and traditional architecture of the Kumamoto plain. Karhu's occasional departures from Kyoto to document other Japanese urban and rural landscapes add dimension to a body of work that can appear, viewed in isolation, as an exclusively Kyoto-centric project.
