The Takasegawa canal in winter completes Karhu's 1990 seasonal [triptych](/glossary/triptych) of the waterway, the bare cherry tree branches now creating a graphic web of dark lines over the grey winter canal. Winter strips the canal of both the blossoms of spring and the leafy canopy of summer, exposing the underlying structure of the scene — the branch patterns, the canal walls, the reflections in still winter water. Karhu finds in this reduction to structure the most austere and formally interesting of his three seasonal views.
