$400–$3,000. Common subjects: $400–$1,000. Key value factors: Okuyama's prints are relatively affordable. Bold, well-preserved examples are most valued.
"Cherry Blossoms at Toshogu Shrine" combines two of Okuyama's recurring subjects — the spectacular Toshogu Shrine complex at Nikko, with its elaborate lacquered gates and halls, and the cherry blossoms (sakura) of early spring — in a composition that plays the pale pink of flowering trees against the brilliant reds and golds of the shrine's architectural decoration. The Toshogu was built in 1617 as the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu and became one of the most elaborately decorated sacred sites in Japan, its famous Yomeimon gate a riot of painted and carved ornament that spring flowers enhanced rather than competed with.
