"Matsudo Bank of Edo River" (Edogawa Matsudo-kishi) presents the broad, slow Edo River as seen from the Matsudo bank in Chiba Prefecture — one of the rivers that defined the flat alluvial plain east of Tokyo, its wide channel bordered by low, green banks with occasional willows and distant industrial or residential structures on the far shore. Okuyama's treatment of the Edo River landscape shows his commitment to depicting ordinary Japanese landscape subjects — not the spectacular Fuji or famous temple gardens but the everyday river views that defined life in the Kanto plain.
