"Mt. Asama from the River Chikuma" presents one of Japan's most active and historically significant volcanoes — Mount Asama on the border of Nagano and Gunma Prefectures — viewed across the Chikuma River (also known as the Shinano River), Japan's longest river, as it flows through the Nagano basin. The combination of active volcano, mountain river, and the wide agricultural plain creates a landscape of great spatial variety, the distant smoking cone of Asama contrasting with the immediate presence of the rushing Chikuma at the viewer's feet.
