A second variant impression in Okuyama's New Snow at the Sacred Bridge in Nikko series, this work documents the printmaker's iterative approach to a single composition. The Shinkyo at Nikko — an arched bridge of red-lacquered cypress constructed in the late seventeenth century — presents a subject whose formal properties lend themselves well to woodblock: strong geometry, high chromatic contrast, and a setting that changes dramatically with seasonal conditions. In this second state, Okuyama may have refined the treatment of fresh snow accumulation on the bridge railings and deck, or adjusted the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) wash across the overcast winter sky. The [washi](/glossary/washi) ground on which each impression was pulled absorbs pigment differently depending on humidity, pressing pressure, and sizing, meaning that even nominally identical states can produce meaningfully different visual experiences. Such variation is a defining characteristic of hand-printed [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) editions.
