Description
"Snowy Farm Landscape" depicts the rural Japanese farmland under a covering of snow — the fields flattened to white, the farmhouse rooflines and bare tree branches the only vertical accents in a composition dominated by horizontal white expanse. The snowy farm landscape was a subject with deep resonance in Japanese poetry and painting, evoking the quiet isolation of winter rural life and the patient endurance of communities that lived through Japan's cold seasons without the comforts that urban life provided. Okuyama's Yamagata upbringing gave him direct knowledge of this experience.
