$400–$3,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Okuyama's prints are relatively affordable. Bold, well-preserved examples are most valued.
"Snowy River Scene" presents a Japanese river in winter — the water dark against white banks, ice possibly forming at the edges, the flowing current the only movement in an otherwise stilled landscape. Rivers in Japanese landscape painting are traditionally subjects of movement and seasonal rhythm, and the winter river — slowed by cold, its banks transformed by snow — captures the season at its most concentrated. Okuyama's treatment of water and snow would have required careful control of the woodblock medium's capacity for conveying both flowing movement and still white masses.
