$500–$8,000. Snow and night scenes tend to command premium prices for this artist. Key value factors: Hagiwara's abstract works are collected by both Japanese print and modern art collectors.
Early Winter in Gotenba (1981–86) places the viewer in the city at the foot of Mount Fuji's southeastern slope, where the mountain's first significant snowfall transforms the familiar urban landscape into something temporarily alpine. Gotenba's proximity to the mountain made it a place where the seasons arrived with unusual force and drama, the first winter snow often visible on Fuji's upper flanks before Gotenba itself felt the cold. Hagiwara renders the early winter atmosphere through the specific quality of light that accompanies the season's first cold days.
