Description
Good Snow (1990–91) — the Japanese concept of "yuki" (snow) combined with the positive evaluation of "good" — renders a snowfall of the kind that is neither dangerous nor merely inconvenient but genuinely beautiful and functionally beneficial. The "good snow" of Japanese agricultural culture was deep, stable snow that protected crops through the winter and would melt gradually to water the spring fields. Hagiwara's treatment captures the quality of stillness and abundance in a heavy, settled snowfall — the snow as gift rather than hardship.
