Temple and shrine subjects are among the most consistently popular categories in Yoshida's output. Standard jizuri prints of temple subjects cluster around $2,149 (dealer price benchmark from 1stDibs), with Chion-in Temple Gate listed at $3,600 and Toshogu Shrine in standard jizuri condition at approximately $2,149. Night or seasonal variants of temple subjects command additional premiums.
This 1933 print depicts a small temple gateway — likely encountered during Yoshida's travels through India or Southeast Asia — framed with the intimate architectural attentiveness that distinguishes his best travel work. Rather than reaching for monumental scale, the composition focuses on the human-proportioned gateway through which light passes and pilgrims move, framing a view beyond that may be garden, courtyard, or sacred interior. The carved stonework of the gate, whether Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain in origin, offered Yoshida a visual puzzle of texture and shadow that rewarded the extended observation his jizuri printing process demanded. The print reflects his belief that the small and particular could hold as much spiritual weight as the grand.
