Description
This third version of Kameido Shrine represents Yoshida's practice of exploring a single subject through multiple compositional and seasonal states, a method rooted equally in his oil painting background and in the shin-hanga convention of issuing variant impressions. Kameido Tenjin's grounds offered consistently compelling visual material — the curved drum bridges, the wisteria trellises in late spring, the stone lanterns casting shadows — and each variant print likely isolates a different element or atmospheric condition. The production of multiple states also served a commercial function, providing collectors with reasons to acquire several impressions from the same location. Technically, each version would have required its own set of carved blocks, meaning the variants are distinct works rather than reprints, each demanding fresh registration and color-mixing decisions from Yoshida's printers.
