Description

Yoshida returned repeatedly to the subject of Japanese pagodas amid seasonal foliage, a pairing that allowed him to combine architectural precision with the organic softness of flowering or leafing trees. A spring setting would almost certainly place cherry blossoms in dialogue with the pagoda's tiered silhouette, with pale pink and white tones against the structure's darker lacquered wood or stone. The vertical axis of a pagoda — often three or five stories — provides a strong compositional spine against which blossoms can be rendered in loose, impressionistic clusters. Bokashi gradations in the sky would situate the scene in clear or hazy spring light. The specific pagoda is unidentified by title alone, but Yoshida documented temples at Nara, Kyoto, and other historic sites during his domestic travels.
