Description
This winter scene depicts a Buddhist temple — likely identified as Shinnyodō (Shinkōōin, Kyoto) or a similarly named site — rendered under snowfall or in the stillness following it. Snow subjects were a recurring challenge in shin-hanga: achieving the luminosity of fresh snow required careful management of the unprinted washi surface, letting the paper's natural white carry the composition. Yoshida would have used dark key-block lines for architectural details — bracketed eaves, rooflines, stone lanterns — against the compressed white field, with subtle bokashi suggesting overcast sky above. The temple gate or main hall likely anchors the composition, while pine or cryptomeria branches bearing snow provide organic contrast to the geometric architecture. The print belongs to a tradition of yuki-e (snow pictures) stretching from Hiroshige to the shin-hanga movement.
