Description

This impression of the Chion-in sanmon composition was printed posthumously by Toshi Yoshida, Hiroshi's son, who continued producing prints from his father's original blocks after Hiroshi's death in 1950. Such later printings are distinguished from lifetime impressions by the absence of Hiroshi's jizuri seal and the presence of Toshi's own certification mark. The Chion-in sanmon in Kyoto — a vast two-story Momoyama-period gate at the head of a broad stone staircase — is one of the most architecturally imposing subjects in Yoshida's Kyoto series. Toshi's printings generally maintain fidelity to the original color scheme and block state, though close inspection may reveal slight differences in ink viscosity, paper selection, or registration compared to impressions produced under Hiroshi's direct supervision. The provenance distinction is significant for collectors: later printings from original blocks carry historical value as faithful reproductions but are categorized separately from lifetime impressions. The composition itself remains a document of Yoshida's architectural draughtsmanship and his ability to convey monumental scale within the oban format.
