Description
This print depicts the ornate Toshogu Shrine complex at Nikko, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu completed in 1636. Yoshida renders the shrine's elaborate lacquerwork and carved architectural details through precise registration of multiple color blocks, capturing the contrast between the richly decorated wooden structures and the surrounding cedar forest. His Western-trained eye for light and shadow adds dimensional depth unusual in traditional woodblock treatment of architecture. The composition likely emphasizes a gate or main hall, using vertical tree trunks to frame the ornamental facades. Gradated bokashi in the sky suggests overcast mountain atmosphere.
