Description
This untitled print appears to depict children, a dog, and a horse in a snow scene — a subject outside Yoshida's typical landscape output but consistent with occasional figure and genre subjects in the shin-hanga period. Snow scenes required careful management of unpigmented washi to render white expanses, with the paper surface itself standing for snow. The inclusion of animals and children suggests a rural winter setting, possibly drawing on European pastoral conventions absorbed during Yoshida's travels. Bokashi gradation in the sky would establish atmospheric cold, while the figures provide scale and narrative interest in an otherwise spare composition.
