Description

A tall, dark-foliaged cedar or cypress rises above a low wooden building with an open awning at left, in front of which several deer gather and recline on the earthen path; more deer stand and wander toward a stone lantern at right, where a red signboard with dark characters hangs from a post. Beyond, rows of tall straight tree trunks recede into a hazy blue-green background under a pale tan sky, with two robed figures standing near the building's entrance. The palette is muted—tans, browns, and greens with touches of red and blue—rendered in soft, flat color washes. "Way to the Kasuga Shrine," Hiroshi Yoshida, 1938, color woodblock print.
