August- Moon — Hachi-gatsu: Tsuki

The third variant of the August moon series completes a triptych of responses to the tsukimi subject that collectively demonstrate range within a fixed seasonal theme. In multi-part moon series, the final design frequently takes the most intimate or reduced approach — perhaps a close view of water reflecting moonlight, or a single figure seated in contemplation beneath the full disk. Sengai's dual career in fine-art illustration and commercial print design gave him command of both expressive brushwork and the efficient compositional clarity required for reproduction. The oban format would have accommodated expansive sky treatment, and the use of graduated washi paper printing through bokashi would soften the boundary between the lit and dark zones of the composition.
