Description
The third variant of the August moon series completes a [triptych](/glossary/triptych) of responses to the tsukimi subject that collectively demonstrate range within a fixed seasonal theme. In multi-part moon series, the final design frequently takes the most intimate or reduced approach — perhaps a close view of water reflecting moonlight, or a single figure seated in contemplation beneath the full disk. Sengai's dual career in fine-art illustration and commercial print design gave him command of both expressive brushwork and the efficient compositional clarity required for reproduction. The [oban](/glossary/oban) format would have accommodated expansive sky treatment, and the use of graduated [washi](/glossary/washi) paper printing through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) would soften the boundary between the lit and dark zones of the composition.
