Description
Koitsu (1897–1987), a student of Hiroshi Yoshida, specialized in atmospheric nocturnal landscapes that push the [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) aesthetic toward dramatic chiaroscuro. This village night scene likely depicts a rural settlement under moonlight or lantern glow, with deep inky shadows offset against softly lit architectural surfaces. Koitsu's night prints depend heavily on skilled [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation from the printer to render the subtle transition between darkness and ambient light sources. The [washi](/glossary/washi) ground plays a crucial role in holding warm lantern tones against cool night sky. His compositions often feature a single path or road receding into darkness, creating depth through a vanishing point rather than layered horizontal planes. As the second of two known impressions of this subject, this print may present a variant viewpoint, season, or color palette while retaining the same compositional approach to rural nocturnal atmosphere. Together the two prints suggest Koitsu returned to the subject to test alternative solutions to its lighting problems.
