Description
Kasuga Shrine in Nara is one of Japan's most ancient and architecturally distinctive sacred sites, its covered corridors hung with hundreds of bronze lanterns donated by worshippers across a millennium, its deer-populated precincts a direct extension of the sacred parkland that surrounds it. The shrine's distinctive vermilion and black architectural scheme, the hanging lanterns, and the stone lanterns lining the approach paths create a visual richness that Nisaburo's shin-hanga technique renders with particular sensitivity to color and atmospheric light.
