$200–$2,000. Temple scenes are among the most popular subjects for this artist. Good temple/garden scenes: $600–$1,200. Key value factors: Ito Nisaburo's Kyoto prints are popular and accessible. Night scenes, snow views, and cherry blossom compositions command premiums.
Kokedera — the Moss Temple — is Saihoji, a Zen temple in the Nishikyo ward of Kyoto where over 120 species of moss carpet the garden in an extraordinary living tapestry of green. The garden, which requires advance reservation to visit, is particularly celebrated for the way the moss creates an atmosphere of preternatural stillness and age — as though the garden exists in a different temporal register from the surrounding city. Nisaburo's woodblock rendering of this unique garden subject would have faced the challenge of conveying the moss's luminous green in all its depth and variety.
