Nigatsu-do Temple and Deer — the second-month hall of Todai-ji in Nara, set on the hillside above the main temple complex, is one of Nara's most atmospherically powerful buildings. The deer of Nara Park, considered sacred messengers of the Kasuga shrine deities, wander freely through the city including the temple grounds, creating the characteristic Nara image of sacred architecture and free-roaming deer in proximity. Nisaburo's woodblock captures this specifically Nara quality — the deer as integral part of the sacred landscape rather than mere incidental wildlife.
