Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
A waterfall cascades through a snow-laden landscape in this 1921 landscape, the contrast between the water's fluid motion and the stillness of accumulating snow creating the central tension of the composition. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations build the cold blue-white atmosphere of a winter scene, while the falling water—too cold to fully freeze, too active to be stilled—occupies the center of the image. Shinsui's confident handling of this complex natural subject at age twenty-three demonstrates his rapid technical maturation.
