Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
The aftermath of snowfall—Yuki no ato—is rendered here as a landscape (or [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga)) that captures the particular hush and brightness of a world blanketed in white. Shinsui returned to snow subjects throughout his career, finding in the season both compositional simplification (the snow erasing detail and unifying surfaces) and emotional intensity. The [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations in snow prints typically work from the deep sky color down through gradations of pale blue and white to render the dimensional quality of fresh snow.
