Awazu, from the series "Eight Views of Omi (Omi hakkei)"
by Ito Shinsui

by Ito Shinsui
Shinsui's extensive oeuvre spans bijin-ga, landscapes, and genre subjects. Auction averages over 12 months reflect healthy collector demand across all subject types.
Awazu, the hot spring resort at the southern end of Lake Biwa near Komatsu, is shown in this early 1917 contribution to the Eight Views of Omi series, one of Shinsui's first major landscape commissions for Watanabe Shozaburo. The composition—probably showing the famous Awazu pine grove reflected in the lake—uses [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations to render the soft, misty quality of the lakeshore landscape. That Shinsui was given this landmark landscape series at nineteen years of age speaks to the immediate recognition his talent received.
