Description
A woman takes the cooling evening air (suzumi) outdoors in this early example from the "New Twelve Images of Modern Beauties" series, the 1917 composition showing Shinsui already confident in the compositional syntax he would develop throughout his career. The evening cool was a specific seasonal experience—leaving the hot interior for the relative relief of the garden or veranda—and its depiction here belongs to the broader shin-hanga project of capturing the sensory richness of the Japanese seasons as experienced in women's daily lives.
