Ishiyama Temple (Ishiyamadera), from the series "Eight Views of Omi (Omi hakkei)"

Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
Ishiyama Temple (Ishiyamadera) on the southeastern shore of Lake Biwa appears in this 1912 contribution to the Eight Views of Omi series—the temple famous for its association with Murasaki Shikibu, author of the Tale of Genji, who is said to have written her novel there by moonlight. The temple's literary associations added a layer of cultural significance to what was already a visually impressive subject: the great temple complex rising above the Seta River where it flows from Lake Biwa. Shinsui's twelve-year-old rendering of this ancient, storied site shows remarkable precocity.
