Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
A simple rendering of snow—雪—as both landscape condition and atmospheric state occupies this undated print, the single-character Japanese title directing attention to the phenomenon itself rather than to any specific scene within it. Shinsui's snow prints range from the grand landscape of after-snowfall to intimate bijin-ga of women in snow, and this work titled simply "Snow" may belong to either tradition. The bokashi gradations that characterized all his snow work build the cold blue-white luminosity of a snowy day.
