Though best known for bijin-ga, Shinsui also produced landscape prints of great refinement. These typically trade at lower prices than his figure subjects but attract collectors seeking less competition.
A woman drawn deeply into her hood against the winter cold, the garment framing her face and creating the composed, almost monumental quality that distinguished Shinsui's snow bijin-ga. Produced in 1950 with a mica-enriched ground, Snow Hood belongs to the postwar period when Shinsui continued refining the seasonal beauty print he had mastered decades earlier. The hood—a simple cotton or silk cowl worn to protect against snow—becomes in his hands an architectural element that focuses attention on the woman's expression.
