Bijin on a sea shore — a composition that replaces the conventional interior or garden setting of bijin-ga with the open, elemental space of the coast. The sea in Japanese art carries associations of vastness, of distant travel and longing, and of the unpredictable forces that govern maritime life. A beautiful woman at the shore may be waiting — the motif of the woman watching the sea for a returning vessel has deep roots in Japanese literature and visual culture — or she may simply be depicted in the dramatic setting as a compositional statement.
