Description
A building stands in winter, its eaves heavy with snow, its windows dark against the pale cold surrounding it. Winter Mansion is among Kawano's architectural subjects — unusual in a body of work dominated by figures and flowers — and the seasonal silence of a snow-covered building carries the contemplative weight of a season spent in waiting and inwardness. The color woodblock format allowed him to render the blue shadows in snow and the warmth of interior light with a specificity unavailable in monochrome printing.
