Description
Takamatsu, the castle town and port on the northeastern coast of Shikoku facing the Seto Inland Sea, is here captured in early morning light. The title's designation of morning—asa—signals the cool, diffuse illumination that Hasui favored for coastal scenes, where the distinction between sea, sky, and shore dissolves in haze. Takamatsu's characteristic pine-dotted shoreline and its historic Tamamo Castle embankment were frequent pictorial subjects, and Hasui may have positioned the castle tower or the sea pines as a backdrop against a pale, graduated bokashi sky shading from rose at the horizon to blue-grey overhead. The stillness of early morning, with perhaps a lone fishing vessel or dock pilings reflected in calm water, exemplifies Hasui's approach to meisho-e in the shin-hanga idiom—familiar place rendered in mood rather than topographic detail.
