Description
Ashinoko (芦ノ湖), Lake Ashi, occupies the caldera of Hakone Volcano in Kanagawa Prefecture and has been a pilgrimage and resort destination since the Edo period. Hasui's print of this subject likely centers on the interplay between the calm lake surface and the silhouette of Mount Fuji visible beyond the western shore, a composition that distills two of Japan's most iconic natural forms into a single image. The Hakone Gongen torii gate standing in the shallows—a red lacquered structure rising from dark water—was a frequent compositional anchor in prints of this lake. Hasui's handling of still water relied on horizontal graduated passages of blue and grey, with the reflection of sky and mountains broken only by the slight tremor of surface wind. The oban sheet accommodates both the expansive horizontal space of the lake and the vertical drama of the distant mountain.
