Description
This print, titled simply Autumn, focuses on seasonal atmosphere rather than a named landmark, suggesting a composition built entirely around the visual qualities of autumn foliage—the range of reds, oranges, and yellows produced by Japanese maples, ginkgo, and lacquer trees against the cooler tones of late-season sky and water. Hasui produced several untitled or generically titled seasonal prints that prioritized mood over topography, and such works required printmakers to achieve complex color gradations across densely carved foliage blocks. The autumn palette—crimson and cadmium against blue-grey—presented technical challenges distinct from his snow and rain prints, demanding precise registration across multiple blocks to achieve the broken, overlapping character of tree canopy. A stream, pond, or path likely grounds the composition, providing a neutral foil against which the colored foliage reads with maximum intensity. The print exemplifies Hasui's treatment of Japanese seasons as emotional states as much as climatic conditions.
