Description

Titled simply Aki (秋, Autumn), this woodblock print exemplifies Hasui's approach to seasonal landscape as a self-contained subject requiring no narrative content beyond the immediate visual experience of the season. The Japanese title suggests a print intended for a domestic audience comfortable reading seasonal mood through landscape convention—red and gold foliage, a quieted sky, perhaps still water or mist-softened distance. Hasui's prints published by Watanabe Shozaburo during the Taisho and early Showa periods were produced in editions that varied in size depending on commercial demand, with later restrikes sometimes distinguishable from first editions by subtle differences in pigment saturation and paper weight. The shin-hanga production system retained the premodern division of labor between artist, carver, and printer, but introduced tighter artist oversight of the final print, giving Hasui's work a consistency of vision not always present in earlier collaborative ukiyo-e. The use of bokashi gradation in the sky and possibly the water surface would be standard technical features of this type of composition.
