Description

A second woodblock print depicting Lake Chuzenji in autumn, this work likely approaches the same meisho location from a different vantage point or under different atmospheric conditions than the companion print. Hasui frequently returned to favored sites across multiple visits and compositions, producing views that collectively build a comprehensive portrait of a place across seasons and times of day. Where one Chuzenji view might emphasize the broad lake surface and distant mountains, another might focus tightly on a section of forested shoreline with the water as a secondary element. The technical vocabulary of both prints would draw from the same repertoire—multiple pigment blocks, bokashi sky gradation, careful carving of individual leaf clusters in the foliage blocks—but the compositional emphasis and palette would be adjusted to convey a distinct visual experience. Hasui's prolific output at celebrated scenic sites reflects the shin-hanga movement's interest in updating the classical Japanese meisho-e tradition for a modern audience while retaining the handcraft production values central to the movement's identity.
