Autumn foliage subjects by Hasui are popular but trade at a slight discount to his snow and rain scenes — the seasonal color is inherently pleasing but less technically demanding than atmospheric precipitation effects. Pre-war lifetime editions command the strongest premiums; combined subjects (autumn foliage with rain, twilight, or temple architecture) approach rain and night scene pricing. Postwar lifetime editions (1946–1957) bearing the small 6mm J-seal represent authentic lifetime impressions but from the artist's final decade.
Autumn at Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki Prefecture, published in 1954, depicts the Fukuroda Falls — one of Japan's three great waterfalls, a four-tiered cascade on the Taki River in the Okukuji mountains — framed by the crimson and gold autumn foliage that makes this site particularly celebrated in fall. The falls' four tiers drop a total of 120 meters through a narrow rocky gorge, and the autumn maple and zelkova that line the gorge walls turn the surrounding forest into a tapestry of warm color against the white cascade. The 1954 date makes this one of Hasui's final major prints, his autumn waterfall subject combining two of his most reliable atmospheric themes: seasonal foliage and falling water.
