Description
This print depicts Haruna Lake (Haruna-ko), the caldera lake formed in the summit crater of Mount Haruna in Gunma Prefecture. Hasui returned to this location across multiple trips, drawn by the dramatic encircling ridgeline and the stillness of the volcanic lake surface. The autumn treatment likely employs graduated bokashi across the sky and water to unify the composition, with crimson and ochre foliage descending from the crater walls to the shoreline. Haruna was a popular destination for Tokyo artists and tourists during the Taisho and early Showa periods, and Hasui's rendering captures the geographic isolation of the site — ringed by peaks that obscure any view of the surrounding plain. The oban format accommodates the panoramic quality of the caldera landscape. Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo's color registration on such layered landscape compositions required precise key-block alignment across multiple impressions.
