Description

Lake Haruna (Haruna-ko, 榛名湖) occupies the caldera of Mount Haruna in Gunma Prefecture, a dormant stratovolcano whose broad summit holds both the lake and the smaller secondary peak Haruna-Fuji, whose regular cone profile dominates the lakeside view. At roughly 1,100 meters elevation, the lake experiences autumn foliage earlier than the surrounding plains, with deciduous trees on the caldera rim and Haruna-Fuji's slopes turning color in October. Hasui's composition likely positions the viewer at the lake's edge looking across the flat water surface toward the mountain cone, the reflected profile of Haruna-Fuji doubling in the still water—a compositional device that echoes the classical Fuji-in-reflection format while substituting a regional mountain. This print, distinguished from related versions by the slug suffix indicating a variant design or edition, shares the fundamental visual logic of Hasui's caldera lake series: horizontal water plane, conical peak, and autumn-toned tree line creating a layered, tranquil composition suited to the oban format.
