Description
This woodblock print constitutes a third treatment of Lake Haruna (Haruna-ko, 榛名湖) in autumn within Hasui's catalog, indicating the site's sustained compositional interest across the artist's career or across different publishing contexts. The caldera lake setting offers Hasui a combination of open water, a geometrically distinct mountain form (Haruna-Fuji), and seasonal foliage that translates readily into multi-block woodblock format. Variations among the Haruna prints likely include different seasonal lighting conditions—morning mist, afternoon clarity, evening light—and different treatments of the lake surface, from mirror-calm reflection to wind-rippled abstraction. Technically, a calm-water composition requires a separate printing block for the reflected sky and mountain, carefully registered to align the inverted image with the printed shoreline above. The use of bokashi gradation on both the sky and the reflected sky blocks creates the graduated atmospheric transition so distinctive in Hasui's lake prints. As a meisho within the Kanto region, Haruna-ko was accessible to Tokyo audiences and carried regional identity for Gunma Prefecture.
