Description
Funatsu is a small settlement on the northern shore of Lake Motosu at the base of the Fuji Five Lakes district in Yamanashi Prefecture, and it appears in several of Hasui's regional landscapes. An autumn print of this location likely positions thatched farmhouses or lakeside grasses in the foreground, with the broad surface of Motosu receding toward a distant treeline under an autumn sky. Mount Fuji may appear in the background — its profile is visible from Funatsu — though Hasui often subordinated iconic peaks to atmospheric and compositional priorities rather than centering them as subjects. The washi ground absorbs the translucent mineral pigments in autumn foliage passages, giving the reds and yellows a warmth that cannot be replicated in Western watercolor on sized paper. The rural quality of Funatsu distinguishes this composition from Hasui's more overtly touristic lakeside prints.
