Description
From Hasui's Korean series, this print depicts a Buddhist temple in the mountains of Joseon (colonial-era Korea). Hasui traveled to the Korean peninsula, producing a group of prints whose foreign subjects were marketed to Japanese audiences familiar with the colonial territory. Mountain temple complexes in Korea, with their tiered wooden halls ascending steep forested slopes, offered compositional structures analogous to Japanese subjects Hasui treated elsewhere. The palette would likely employ the dark greens and ochres of pine-forested Korean mountain terrain alongside the vermilion-lacquered pillars and gray tile roofs of the temple structures. These Korean prints are less frequently encountered than Hasui's domestic series and represent a distinct documentary strand within his landscape practice.
