Description
This edition of the Chii Mountain Senon Temple print represents Hasui's documentary approach to Korean subjects during his travels to the peninsula. The composition frames the temple structures within the rugged topography of the mountain, likely showing stone stairs, lanterns, or gateway elements characteristic of Korean Buddhist mountain temples. Hasui's handling of the natural setting — rock faces, pine stands, or cloud-covered peaks — draws on the same meisho-e tradition he applied to Japanese sacred sites. The washi paper's absorbent surface would have supported the fine gradations needed to distinguish stone masonry from surrounding vegetation. This print belongs to a group of related impressions documenting the same site across multiple publishing runs.
