Description
This print depicts the Senon Temple complex on Chii Mountain in Korea, recorded during Hasui's travels to the peninsula in the early 1930s when Korea was under Japanese administration. The composition likely positions the temple's tiled rooflines against steep forested slopes, with the architecture embedded in the mountainside rather than dominating it. Hasui employed bokashi gradations to render atmospheric depth across the mountain recesses, a technique transferred from his Japanese landscape practice to this Korean subject. The treatment of the complex stone terracing and layered eave profiles gives the scene a documentary quality characteristic of his regional travel prints. This is one of several editions of the composition, with subtle variations in color saturation distinguishing different print runs.
