Description
This print depicts the Konjikido (Golden Hall) at Chusonji temple in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, the twelfth-century gilded mausoleum built by the Fujiwara clan and a designated National Treasure. The Konjikido is housed within a protective outer building, and Hasui's composition likely frames the lacquered and gilded structure in the context of its wooden enclosure or its immediate stone-paved precinct. The challenge of rendering gold leaf surfaces in woodblock required careful use of metallic or ochre pigments and selective burnishing by the printer. The composition may emphasize the contrast between the ornate architectural surfaces and the surrounding forested hillside or winter snow that frequently features in Hiraizumi prints. The title specifically names the kinirodo (golden hall), confirming this as a focused architectural study rather than a general temple view.
