Description
Tagonoura, a bay on Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, has been associated with views of snow-capped Mount Fuji since the Man'yoshu poetry anthology. Hasui's composition places the viewer at the beach or harbor looking northwest toward Fuji's clearing white summit. Fresh snow on the peak contrasts with the dark, rain-washed sand or the blue-grey water of the bay in winter. Fishing boats or pine-covered headlands may occupy the middle ground. Hasui treats Fuji with restraint, avoiding the exaggerated scale of earlier Hokusai or Hiroshige treatments and instead integrating the mountain naturally into the coastal landscape. The print belongs to his documented Fuji series and demonstrates shin-hanga's capacity for subtle tonal gradation in rendering both water and snow-covered volcanic rock.
