Description
A variant edition of Hasui's Tagonoura Beach and Mount Fuji composition, this print renders the same coastal subject — the view of Fuji from Suruga Bay's shoreline following a snowfall — under a slightly different color scheme or block state. Multiple editions of popular Hasui subjects were common within the Watanabe and Doi publishing systems, with later printings occasionally showing altered sky tones, revised foreground color, or differences reflecting block wear and re-cutting. The Tagonoura subject connects to a deep tradition of Fuji meisho imagery. In this state, Fuji's snow-bright cone rises above the coastal pine or beach vegetation, the residual storm clouds breaking to reveal the summit. The gradation from winter sea to pale sky to white peak is the print's central technical achievement.
