Description
Hasui's treatment of sunset cloud formations drew on the atmospheric tradition established by Hiroshige, reinterpreted through the technically refined printing practices of the shin-hanga period. This composition centers on clouds catching the last light of sunset, their undersides rendered in warm tones contrasting with the cooler hues of the surrounding sky. Water in the foreground or middle distance would serve as a secondary reflective surface, doubling the color effects achieved through multiple woodblock passes. The gradual transitions of tone across the sky required careful registration and controlled pigment application with a baren to prevent uneven ink distribution. This print and its variant (recorded separately in the same collection) likely represent different print runs, editions, or paper variants of the same design, a common occurrence in Watanabe's publishing practice.
