Same (pronounced sha-meh) is a coastal district within Hachinohe city in southern Aomori Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean on the Sanriku coast, an area characterized by rocky basalt headlands, deep-water fishing grounds, and the distinctive light of the open Pacific. This print from the eastern Japan edition of Nihon fukei shu depicts the shoreline, likely featuring dark coastal rock formations against a wide expanse of sea and sky, with fishing vessels at anchor or returning to harbor in the late afternoon or early morning. The Sanriku coast's dramatic topography—steep cliffs meeting the sea—would have provided Hasui with unusually pronounced vertical compositional elements within an otherwise horizontal landscape format. The cooler Tohoku palette, dominated by deep blues, gray-greens, and the ochre of weathered stone, reflects the particular quality of northern Pacific light. The print documents a working maritime community on Japan's northeastern edge, a region seldom depicted in the central landscape tradition before Hasui's systematic regional surveys.
